I sometimes get questions about the existence of Jesus from dishonest and ignorant people. Often I feel those questions should not be dignified with a reply. However, I believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt, and the opportunity to know the true and only Savior, because that is exactly what Christ himself would have done.
People even with the most rudimentary knowledge of history know that at the very least there are, not hundreds, but millions of books written about Christ. History would be almost incomprehensible without Christ. Western culture and American democracy would not have been possible without the influence of Jesus and his words in the Bible. Therefore, doubting the existence of Jesus is equal to saying that history and western culture are based on a myth.
Proving that Christ was a real person is not an issue to any thinking person with a general knowledge of history. However, Christ was much more than a historic figure. He was God in the flesh, the Savior sent by the Father to die for the sins of humanity. He claimed to be the Creator of the universe, the one who can forgive sins. The totality of the prophesies concerning his life and work came true when he came to this world. He also said the Bible is the word of God. Now, if the Bible is not the word of the only true God, Christ was a liar. But if he told the truth, as we believe he did, then the Bible is the word of the living God, and the Bible says that Christ is the only way to heaven, the only Savior. You see, truth is not relative to the individual. Truth is absolute. The law of gravity is an absolute truth. Even if you deny it’s true, if you jump from a ten story building, you will surely pay the consequences. Fundamental biblical truths about Christianity are the same. You may choose to reject them, but you will surely pay the consequences of your decision, and not invalidate those truths at all.
No theologian or serious Bible scholar worth its salt would even dare to challenge the divinity of Christ, much less his existence.
I recommend reading the great little book More Than a Carpenter, by Josh MacDowell, and The Case for Chirst, by Lee Strobel. Last but not least, read the Gospel of John. You must be warned- reading the Bible could lead to a radical transformation in your own life. Remember, we cannot both be right about this issue. This is the law of non-contradiction: the opposite of true is false. However, if I am wrong, I have nothing to lose, but you would have everything to lose, because Christ said that he is the only way to heaven, and the only ticket out of hell. What you believe or not will not change these biblical truths; however it will affect your eternal destiny.
May the historical Jesus, the Christ of the Bible, the Savior of the world, give you understanding and humility to believe and accept these truths and know the Savior personally, not because I say so, but because they are fundamental truths for all humans.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16).”
